What it controls
Allows the driver to raise the idle speed from the steering wheel controls while the vehicle is stationary — useful to speed up cab heating, to run a compressor or to charge batteries after long standstill. The variable idling function is separate from the bodywork raised idle: it is driver-controlled from the cab, while the raised idle is requested by the body. Vehicles ordered without the function can have it enabled in the SOPS specification, as it needs no additional hardware. Some fleet managers prefer it disabled to avoid unnecessary idling and fuel use; in that case only the bodywork raised idle (if fitted) can increase the engine speed at standstill.
